Extraordinary news! The new Broadway cast recording of Pippin will be released digitally on June 4 by Ghostlight Records. The previously announced album is slated to hit stores on July 9. Featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson, the Tony-nominated revival is currently playing at the Music Box Theatre, starring Tony nominee Patina Miller, Matthew James Thomas and Tony winner Andrea Martin.
The new recording will feature an essay by director Diane Paulus and liner notes by Stephen Schwartz, in addition to the complete lyrics and 26 pages of color photos. The album will also include four bonus tracks that allow listeners to sing along with the Pippin orchestra: “Corner of the Sky,” “Simple Joys,” “Kind of Woman” and “Extraordinary.” On the track “No Time At All,” a chorus of 700 Broadway fans were invited to sing along with star Andrea Martin in the recording studio.
In addition to Miller as the Leading Player, Thomas as Pippin and Martin as Berthe, Pippin stars Terrence Mann as Charles, Charlotte d’Amboise as Fastrada and Rachel Bay Jones as Catherine. The musical tells the story of Pippin, a royal heir who is encouraged by a mysterious group of performers to set out on a death-defying journey to find his “corner of the sky.” The production was nominated for 10 2013 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival.
